The Game You Wish You Played Before it Was Delisted. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game

REVIEW: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game on Nintendo Switch

The Game You Wish You Played Before it Was Delisted.

Some games come and go because they fail to connect with audiences, quickly becoming another footnote in gaming history. But for other games, the picture is much more complicated, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is one such game.

First released in January 2010, Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game is a side-scrolling, beat'em up game, loosely following the story of the wildly popular graphic novels. Not only was the title hotly anticipated before its release, but it quickly resonated with audiences due to its retro style, old-school video game references, and comic-book feel. By August 2010, the industry-leading game publication IGN had named it the 25th best game on Xbox Live Arcade[1].

With the now cult-classic movie Scott Pilgrim vs The World released the same year and bringing in new audiences, the future looked bright for the game. But then everything changed. The game was delisted from all storefronts only four years after release due to licensing issues, and a unique brawler was suddenly lost forever. Or so it seemed. Now over a decade since the game's original release, gamers everywhere that missed the opportunity the first time around finally get the chance to play Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game. But how does the game stack up in 2021?

Story and Gameplay

For those who haven't seen the movie or read the comics, the story follows slacker Scott Pilgrim who falls in love with a mysterious girl called Romona Flowers. In this bizarre comic style rom-com, Scott has to battle through seven levels of Romona's evil exes, defeating them one by one to win the girl.

If you're not a fan of rom-com content, don't be too deterred. There's very little storytelling in the gameplay and plenty of punching and explosive combos. The seven exes are also distinct enough from each other to keep things fresh. We have the telekinetic vegan, an ex-girlfriend who can summon clones of herself, a greasy-haired skater, and plenty of other colourful characters.

The gameplay centres around clearing baddies and looting their bodies for bus money while you make your way to that level's evil ex (boss). Compared to other games in the arcade beat-em-up genre, this game does require a little more thought and a little less button smashing. The enemies hit hard. Managing your combos poorly, like going in with a strong offence when a defence is more called for, can cost you the fight.

What's the Verdict?

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game remains a top-tier beat-em-up title 10 long years on from its release. It's rich in action and nostalgia, and while it offers no new content, it takes an already entertaining title and makes it accessible to a whole new generation of gamers. Lastly, the game's unique arcade style is an excellent fit for the Nintendo Switch's hardware. So if you missed your opportunity to play Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game the first time around now is your time!
