Just landed: Elden Ring Launch Edition for PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series X/Xbox One
For lovers of the Souls video games or those who have been waiting for a new open world game to enjoy, Elden Ring is now available. This role-playing game features all of the hard hitting enemies and high risk combat you would expect from a Soulslike game, but with a refreshing element of flexibility that means you can progress at your own pace and not feel like you are stuck, banging your head against the wall when faced with an impassable task.
Initially expected last October and then rescheduled to January before the release date of 25th February was announced, it’s been a long wait for those who have been reading all the hype about Elden Ring and getting excited to dive into the gameplay. So what is Elden Ring all about?
What is Elden Ring?
Elden Ring is a Soulslike FromSoftware game which feels familiar to Dark Souls, but you play in an open world environment. This means that the structured gameplay is gone and instead replaced by a more liberal, virtual world that you can explore and approach at your own pace.
The game is set in the world of Lands Between after the Elden Ring has been destroyed and its fragments (Great Runes) have been scattered. Players must travel through Lands Between, finding these runes to restore the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.
On your journey, in which you’ll mostly travel on horseback, you will explore catacombs and castles and encounter enemies and Non-Player Characters as you search for the missing Great Runes.
Combat will be frequent and varied and you’ll need to rely on a strategic approach to beat each unique enemy but with a choice of player classes from warrior to vagabond, enchanted knight to astrologer, you’ll have the opportunity to shape your character to suit your gaming style.
What makes Elden Ring different?
If you love worldbuilding and this is an important element when making gaming choices then you’re going to love Elden Ring. The realm of Lands Between has been created by fantasy author George R. R. Martin, who is most famous for his A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy book series which was later adapted for the television hit Game of Thrones.
The fantasy elements of fast travel, spells and spirit summons all combine to give you optimum opportunity to explore the virtual world of Lands Between, but watch out for the poison swamps and keep an eye on your stamina if you want to keep your character alive.
Like many other open world games, Elden Ring is multiplayer and up to 4 players can play co-op, meaning you’ll most likely need to invite your 3 friends to join you in your quest.
