5 Things We Love About Far Cry 6
The Far Cry franchise has been kicking around since 2004, with six mainline games and at least a half dozen spin-offs. By the time the series hit Far Cry 6, you might assume that the formula had gotten stale, but developer Ubisoft has kept this first-person action franchise fun and exciting. After a few sequels shook things up, Far Cry 6 calls back to older games in the series, letting you explore a tropical island in whatever playstyle you prefer. In fact, Far Cry 6 offers more freedom than most other FPS games, resulting in an addictive experience that plays out at your preferred pace. Even now, a few months after its initial release, we're still pouring hours and hours into the game. To help you understand why, here are five things we love about Far Cry 6!
5 Things We Love About Far Cry 6
- The Tropical Setting
Far Cry 6 is set in the fictional island nation of Yara, dominated by the fierce dictator Anton Castillo. Covered in lush vegetation, sandy beaches, and even picturesque mountaintops, Yara is a beautiful location that many would consider a prime vacation destination. However, with all the bandits, militant police, and poverty, the country is somewhat worse for wear. When compared to Far Cry 4's mountainous Kyrat and Far Cry 5's rural plains of Hope County, Yara is much closer to the kind of location we expect to explore in the franchise. While the previous locales were enjoyable enough, it's a treat to have some fun in the sun in Far Cry 6.
- You Can Play How You Want
One of the best parts of Far Cry 6 is the freedom it gives to the player. You're rarely forced to play in one specific style, as the game encourages you to take on missions your way. Gameplay freedom is a core theme of Far Cry 6, with dozens of different guns to equip and modify, special crafting weapons called Resolvers, and much more. The gear system has also received an overhaul, with various pieces of armor granting unique buffs and benefits. You're no longer looking for gear that's better than what you're wearing, but instead searching for stuff that better suits your playstyle. For example, some outfits will buff stealth and gadget reserves, while others increase your ammo count and resilience. Whether you choose to take on encounters with guns blazing or silent stealth, Far Cry 6 rewards you for playing to your strengths.
- Animal Amigos
Far Cry 6 offers a similar feature to Far Cry 5, letting you link up with companions who will help you during missions. However, every companion in Far Cry 6 is a lovable animal pal known as an amigo, and there are plenty to choose from. Whether you're a fan of crocodiles, chickens, panthers, or even weiner dogs in wheelchairs, Far Cry 6 has an animal buddy for you. Depending on your playstyle, some amigos will be more beneficial, as they specialize in either stealth or combat. For example, Chorizo the dog will distract enemies for a few seconds, while Guapo the crocodile quickly snaps down on foes with his massive maw. While we undoubtedly have a favorite, each amigo is worth trying out for a few missions.
- Hunting for Treasure
While Far Cry 6 offers exhilarating combat and explosive moments of destruction, one of our favorite parts of the game is its relaxed treasure hunt missions. Often located in secluded parts of the map that are well off the beaten path, treasure hunts are short side-missions that challenge your ability to climb and explore rather than hunt and kill. You'll swim into underwater caverns, rappel down cliff-sides, and venture into dark and dangerous cave systems all for the love of loot. It's easy to get caught up in the chaos of Far Cry 6's gunplay, but it's surprisingly fun to ignore the mayhem and bask in the thrill of hunting for treasure.
- Endgame and Updates
Best of all, Far Cry 6 is a game that keeps giving, with plenty of content to complete after you've cleared the main story. There are dozens of side-missions to finish and outposts to liberate, and clearing the entire map is a daunting task. Ubisoft has been good about supporting the game post-release as well, with several free content packs that include extra missions, gear, and more. From a Rambo tie-in to a series of missions starring actor Danny Trejo, there are some excellent post-game updates to play. Timed events are also available in the endgame “insurgency” mode, offering even more unique rewards. Simply put, Far Cry 6 is a game that offers over 50 hours of content, with enough updates to keep you playing for even longer.
